Getting the most from a facilitated workshop

A facilitated workshop is different from a fun activity. The activities are still there, but they are used as a shared experience that helps the group talk honestly about how they work together. The facilitator's job is to guide that conversation safely and keep it on track.

Brief the facilitator well

Protect the conversation

Participants speak more openly when they trust that what they say will not be used against them. If a senior leader attends, agree their role in advance. Sometimes the most useful thing a manager can do is listen.

Leave with a few commitments

A workshop that ends with twenty actions usually delivers none. Aim for two or three specific commitments, each with an owner, and a date to check progress.

This team workshop guide sets out practical ways to keep those commitments alive in the weeks after a session.
